Usually, you can purchase thermal labels with a doc tab addition on top of the typical 4x6" label. Well, on other programs like ShipRush, we should be able to print item names/packing slip information on the doc tab. This is really really useful!

Would like to see support added for thermal label size of 4X8. We use that size for WorldShip today so we have freight amount/other details on bottom tear off tab.

Would like end of day reports to reflect all shipments and not just ground shipments.

The label is a 4 x 6.75 with a .5in separate tab on the bottom of the label that can hold information regarding the order. ShipRush would put the date label created, postal code, tracking number and shipping method. Use this link to FedEx that fully explains the doc tab. http://www.fedex.com/us/developer/product/WebServices/MyWebHelp/Forms-Labels-Reports/r_Doc-TabConfig.html You would need to add a new shipping label on the Settings page for label to use. I would really also like this feature!

This would be very useful! Thoughts on making this possible: I can see having the option for customizing a packing slip template that supports the small format of the doc tab, then choosing the option to print the labels with packing slip similar to the option already available - only it would print the packing slip to the doc slip on the label rather than requiring an entirely separate label.

Please. All it needs is a bit of a summary in the 2"x4" second label! :) It would let us retain a physical copy of the tracking number to apply to our in-house invoices.

We need to be able to use a label size of 4"x8.25" perforated label. With the perforated portion of the label being 2.25". When we ship an order UPS the perforated part of the label goes to accounting and has the shipping cost, tracking number and other information on it that then goes with the paperwork they keep. This also tells them what to charge for shipping. I am sure other SS users would like to have more options for the type/size of labels used when shipping. Without this I have more steps to shipping which we are trying to have less steps.

We need this as well for our internal records. I was amazed shipstation did not support it when every other piece of software we use does (even stamps.com directly will let us print doc labels). Going back to 4x6 labels in the printer is not an option for us because we use other smaller carriers that shipstation does not support, all of which use the doc label as well.

This would be incredibly helpful for us. We use UPS' 4x8 Thermal Label with the 2" perforation. We use this tab to keep track of serial numbers after shipment. I would love to be able to assign custom fields (customer name, order number, tracking number) to the tear off. We are handwriting this information currently. PLEASE!!!!!!

Admin, Our doc labels include: (UPS) Tracking number, ship method, date, package number and the total packages in the shipment, up to 4 reference numbers (one is the order number), declared value, any and all fees associated with the package each with their own line item, cod amount, indicator flags for large package and dangerous goods, box weight (dimensional and actual), total shipment weight, and our rates for both published and negotiated shipping costs. (USPS) Tracking number, order number, date, cost, weight, mailing class, 1 reference number, and the customer's name. Of these the UPS one is the most useful. Both of these labels get placed on an internal copy of the invoice which we use to compare our weekly billing statements with UPS to make sure they did not do anything funny and over charge us or add some correction fee. Additionally we use them as a quick reference if we ever have to file a claim, or look up a tracking number for an order because it stays with the paperwork. It is basically an offline copy that we use often for reference. Without these labels we would have to hand write most of this information on the orders for our records. If you have an email I can send you pictures of example labels and their doc tabs if you would like.

It acts as a pseudo receipt of shipping info (tracking number, details, etc) that can be directly applied to our copy of a PO that we file. Basically a physical copy of the shipping details. We use it with stamps.com that way. I am sure there are other uses, but this is how we use it. Not to mention the fact that we get these labels and currently don't have any use for the lower portion when using SS.

IT WOULD ALLOW LABEL TO HAVE 2 REFERENCE NUMBERS ON LABEL .NO ROOM WHEN USING UPS SUREPOST

We used to use the extra space to print a larger version of our logo, as well as our contact information.

Here is a diagram of the FedEx 6.75" x 4" doc tab label: http://www.hollandcomputers.com/store/pc/FedEx-4-in-x-6-75-in-large-thermal-label-with-1-in-core-shipping-labels-420-labels-per-roll-p10631.htm We would like to print the order number on the tab.

8" labels that have 6" for the label and 2" perforated for a small receipt with customer name, address, date shipped, service used and tracking number would be nice to have.

  • October 16, 2015
For me personally, It allows us to put a copy the tracking number on every page that is printed. So if I need to have an order looked up, I dont have to have the team member log into a website to find tracking. That is a huge time saver when you do this multiple times per day. Also its is a visual confirmation that the order was shipped for anyone trying to figure out order status in various scenarios.

  • October 16, 2015
It is like a receipt that gets put on to a hard copy of the invoice and can be looked up manually.

We pack 50-75 packages at a time and the order number is written/stickered on the outside of the package before taping it shut. We associate shipping labels with packages using the order number...unfortunately FedEx smart post labels do not allow us to add the order number to the label, so we have no easy way to associate the label to the package. We would like to use the doc tabs to "add" the order number to FedEx smart post labels.

We want it for two main reasons: 1) We sell a lot of gift items. Currently Shipstation prints out the item name on the bottom of the shipping label itself so when people receive their package, they already know what is inside. That kind of defeats the purpose of a surprise opening of the gift. If it is printed on the doc tab, it allows our packers to still confirm that the item they are packaging is the item that the customer ordered (a visual confirmation they are not packaging the wrong item to the wrong order). 2) We do not want the post office or letter carrier to know what is inside the package for fear of theft, etc.

Thank you everyone for the updates, we'd love to get as much information as we can so if you haven't yet, please let us know how Doc Tabs help your workflow! @sachin86 - If your item names are showing on your labels, it sounds like you have your label messages set up that way. Here's how to change that: https://help.shipstation.com/hc/en-us/articles/206639957

So we still want that the item name appears somewhere (as it helps the packers confirm that the right item is going to the right person), but we don't want it on the shipping label. We want it on the doc tab so that the customer/postal carrier does not know what is in there. Does that make sense?

  • October 20, 2015
Thanks for all the feedback everyone, if you have any other uses please let us hear it! We read all of your comments as they come in. @sachin86 - thanks for the update! Yes, it makes sense. Have you looked into using packing slips or order summaries (great for record keeping!) for this purpose? Or is this doc tab going to serve as a sort of mini-packing slip as suggested by @Chad earlier? Please let us know if these aren't good fits for you, and we'll reach out to you if we need more info so we don't keep blowing up everyone's inboxes. ;) Here's some info on gift packing slips (doesn't show price) if any one is interested: https://help.shipstation.com/hc/en-us/articles/205901218

Haha thanks for your quick responses and interest in adding this feature. Yes, we do use order summaries to pull and pack orders. But still, this is like a double check and it almost always eliminates any order mistakes. Ever since we started having the item name printed on the shipping label, it has reduced order errors by 60%. An even better suggestion would be that you allow us to print many more characters on the doc tab than is currently allowed on the shipping label itself. That way longer item titles don't get cut off and we will be even more accurate!

Shipment details. Tracking, weight, dimensions etc

I would like the ability to print our logo across the top of a 4x8 thermal label. Being able to customize the content would be great too, such as having the ability to upload our own image for this space or the ability to add a coupon code or a marketing message about an upcoming promotion, a QR code, etc.

SS, This would be very helpful, and extremely cost effective, to have a condensed packing slip able to print to a doc-tab, rather than using up an entire additional label to accomplish the same.
