Filter "Hidden" Line-Item Properties from [Item Options] (ShipStation)

Line-items properties in Shopify typically represent item options, such as special instructions (e.g., the text for an inscription). These are automatically imported to ShipStation as part of the line-item's [Item Options] field, which can optionally displayed on Packing Slip Templates. Sometimes, however, these are used for internal communications between e.g. Shopify apps. To support this, Shopify themes have a built-in convention where line-item properties prefixed with an underscore (e.g., _internalOption) are hidden from the customer: https://help.shopify.com/themes/customization/products/get-customization-information-for-products#hide-line-item-properties Unfortunately, while these will be hidden on Shopify, they will be displayed on packing slips as part of the [Item Options] property (alongside valid customer options). Ideally, ShipStation would either a) remove these when importing orders from Shopify, or b) hide these when displaying the [Item Options] field. (Acknowledging the latter would affect all customers, not just Shopify customers, and thus may be too invasive).

Note: This is similar to (albeit more specific than) the following previous proposals, which relate to other scenarios where customers would like the ability to remove or break out line-item properties. Given this, there may also be room for a more general solution, such as breaking down line-item properties into an array that can be accessed by key in the Packing Slip Templates. We are in a similar situation and would like to see this feature - for example we have a "hidden" item that is a Monogram Addition using the Bold Product Options app in Shopify. The monogram addition gets added as a line item to customs forms, etc, that we have to manually remove.

Hi I have been trying to figure out a way to remove line item options that are prefixed with an underscore from my packing slips. Just bumping this up as I haven't seen anything related lately. Hope

Same as Walnutstudiolo below... We have Bold Options as well and it looks pretty nasty on our packing slips. Would love to have this worked out!

My commenting here is like a hail-mary. Maybe if I have enough faith the shipstation gods will grant me my wish. It would be so awesome if you could just specific a specific option in the packing slip. For example: [Item Option NAME] where NAME is whatever the option name is, and if no option exists with that, of course it would just print nothing. I hate that I cannot organize my packing slip with specific option information to a column, and instead am relegated to putting all information into a single column which is just horrible.

I really wish this feature were implemented. It seems like it would be trivial to just have [Item Options - NAME] to be able to select a specific item option by name in the template.

Agreed! This would be so helpful for the packing slips but also for pick lists!

Just wanted to say, here we are again in 2020, still asking for this simple yet powerful feature. Each year around this time, I giddily think to myself, maybe Shipstation will make my Christmas dreams come true this year!! And then, that small, precious, fragile dream is crushed by the reality that, Yes, Virginia, Shipstation just doesn't give a !@#$ about this feature :( What is needed is the ability to say [Item Option - SOME KEY] in the template and only output that option value. Please, please, please for the love of businesses everywhere, make this happen! Having only the ability to export ALL OPTION VALUES AT ONCE or NOTHING makes no sense!!!

We really need this feature - we use up to 10 line item properties for custom monogramming on our products & the packing slips get very cluttered with all of the internal Shopify IDs that are in line item properties. Attaching an example packing slip. Ideally we would be able to hide all of the highlighted fields on the packing slip.

Yes my client is having the same issue when using a third party gift wrapping/multiple shipping app. having all the extra code in addition to the name of the items creates a mess for both the person fulfilling the orders and the customer. This really should be sorted out considering how many folks are now using shopify.

We've been dealing with this problem since 2013 and it's a huge impediment to efficient workflow. Like others, we have to manually edit out these line items in Shopify before importing them into Shipstation. I just started looking into this solution again today because we had a product launch and had to manually edit 500 orders. It's a huge pain point for everyone in this workstream and causes shipping errors if anyone makes a mistake during the manual edit. People say this all the time, but this request has been open for almost 5 years. I understand that votes are required to prioritize this, but "options" must be common to many Shopify users and there are plenty of people suffering the same headache but not voting here.

This post describes it best: http://feedback.shipstation.com/forums/330429-product-feedback-fresh-ideas/suggestions/15949825-filter-hidden-line-item-properties-from-item-op I see this constantly in the HTML slack channel, and this thread gives a lot of context from user's perspectives, it's just quite old and I wanted to re-post it internally.

So I comment on here every year. Unfortunately I missed 2021. But no worries, here we are in 2022!!! Yeahhh!

Can you believe it? That this problem has been in existence since 2013 and nobody at shipstation can prioritize it? Me neither! It's seriously unbelievable! Come on!!! Please!! I'll order you pizza! I'll order you 10 pizzas! With any toppings except for pineapple because honestly what an abomination! Please make us happy! 2022 is the year I'm feeling it!

We have the same problem - hoping to see a solution soon!

  • March 10, 2025

And still the same problem in 2025. When I came here to ask for this, I had NO IDEA it had been asked for for 9 YEARS now. We have some line item properties we need to keep, but if Shipstation could follow the Shopify rule to hide line item properties with the underscore at the beginning, that would be the answer to our issues as well.

Unbelievable this is still an issue. October 2025 and it's still bad. Are there good alternatives to SS? Because this is egregious.

Hello @admin200 and all our wonderful merchants in the Community~

Thank you so much for your patience while we worked on this feature. The development team reviewed the issue yesterday and implemented a fix. You should now see an option in your Printing Settings to hide item options for the Pick List.

If you run into any other issues, please don’t hesitate to reach out—I’ll be happy to help in any way I can!

Happy Shipping!

-Cara

Hi @CaraAdmin

First, I'd like to thank you and the development team for looking into this. I would also like to add some additional context related to this issue.

The challenge is specifically related to packing slips rather than pick lists (since customers don't typically see the pick lists, we're not so concerned about those). Also, we don't want to hide all of the item attributes. In some cases, an item may have custom text or options selected by the customer, and it is important to include those items. However, Shopify apps often include "hidden" data as item attributes prefixed with an underscore. Since this data is not intended to be visible, it is very functional in nature (could be numbers, codes, etc. that only make sense to the apps that use them). When this type of data is printed on the packing slips, it just adds confusion, and appears unprofessional.

With this being the case, any solution would need to be nuanced enough to exclude only certain items with a given criteria (those beginning with an underscore, for example).

I've included an example below showing what this looks like (highlighted portion should be hidden). The attribute in Shopify looks like _has_gpo, and Shopify knows to hide this info when printing a packing slip.
