Description
Summary
We would like to request an optional security control for the Reprint Label function: a one-time passcode (OTP) that must be entered before a label can be reprinted. The OTP would be sent to a designated manager or admin account, so only authorized users can approve a reprint.
The Problem
In high-volume fulfillment environments, the Reprint Label option is easy to use and, as a result, easy to misuse. Our team regularly runs into situations where:
- The same label is reprinted and applied to a second package, so the order ships twice.
- Reprints happen without any oversight or reason being recorded.
- Duplicate shipments lead to unnecessary shipping costs, inventory discrepancies, and extra customer service work.
Today, any user with access to the order can reprint a label, and there is no approval step to prevent accidental or unauthorized duplicates.
Proposed Solution
Add an optional setting (under account or user permissions) that lets admins enable OTP verification for reprinting labels:
- A user clicks Reprint Label.
- ShipStation sends a one-time passcode to a designated manager or admin account (via email or authenticator/SMS).
- The label is reprinted only after the manager provides the correct code.
- The reprint is logged with the requesting user, the approving manager, and a timestamp.
Suggested Options
- Choose which user roles require approval, so managers can reprint without an OTP.
- Set one or more approver accounts per store or account.
- Add an optional "reason for reprint" field.
- Include reprint approvals in the activity or audit log.
Benefits
- Prevents duplicate shipments and the costs that come with them.
- Gives managers visibility and control over label reprints.
- Improves accountability and auditing.
- Reduces inventory and customer service issues from double-shipped orders.
We believe this would be valuable for any team with multiple warehouse or fulfillment users. Thank you for considering it, and we'd love to hear whether others face the same issue.
