Being limited to 5 batch labels seems a little arbitrary and just few enough to make it not useful for more complex sorting...

Depending on the size of your orders and the items being shipped. For our company I feel it would be nice to alter this number depending on the time of year. Possible to 10 labels at a time. This would greatly reduce the shipping errors we have been experiencing with our shipping department batching out large amounts of labels at once.
