Zebra Auto-Cutter for Packing Slips & Labels

Anyone have experience using an auto-cutter for 4x6 labels when printing batches? We have 2 or sometimes 3 total labels printed (Packing Slip(s) and Shipping Label) and are trying to save time tearing labels by using the auto-cut functionality. Zebra's printers with cutting addons allow you to send a "cut" command, but it isn't clear on how to do that with Shipstation. Anyone have any luck?

3 things.

1. Don't do it. The cutters are not really designed for labels. They are designed things like tickets etc. Unless you have the printer dialed in all the time, they will sometimes cut on the label and the glue gums up the cutter and causes so many issues. This comes from years of experience 🙂

2. There is no setting in SS for this. Its all done at the driver. For the zebra printers, I recommend downloading and using the Seagull driver for Zebra and TSC printers. It has a lot more options and much easier to use than zebra. https://www.seagullscientific.com/support/downloads/drivers/zebra/

3. Do yourself a favour and move to printing on demand at the packing table and just batch packing slips. The advantages is that you won't have to worry about breaking up all the labels as you will do them one at a time, and secondly, if you batch too far ahead, customers will get notification that their orders have "shipped" even if they haven't left your facility yet. Totally recommend looking into SS Scan to Verify and Print for this. You will thank me later 🙂

I know I'm very late with this reply, but I just wanted to comment in case anybody else is wondering the same thing. I use two Zebra GX420d units, both with cutters with Shipstation. And they work great! Shipstation itself doesn't have any settings for the cutter (like the other commenter said). Everything is handled by the print driver.

But, I use my Zebras soley with 4 x 6 labels and I've never had a single issue with them cutting the labels like the other reply said. I've literally printed thousands of labels, and every single one has been cut perfectly. They work great, and its way easier with the cutter than tearing them off. I'd definitely recommend that everyone uses a cutter with 4x6 labels. It's worth it and does save time.

Josh55, does your auto cutter cut after 1 label or after 2 (to accommodate packing slip + label setting in ShipStation)? I'm looking to do every 2.

It cuts after every single label. I’m not sure there’s a setting to make it cut after two.

EDIT: Update, this is WRONG! See my additional reply below.

Hi Steph,

Sorry I was mistaken. You can actually set it in the label printer preferences to cut after a specified number of labels. In Printing Preferences -> Advanced Settings, there is an option under Cutter that says "Group Quantity". So if you set this to 2, it will cut after every two labels.

Hopefully this will do what you are looking for!
