Major Flaw in Shopify Edited Orders on Shipstation

There is a major issue with how shipstation handles edited orders on Shopify.

When an order is placed its imported into shipstation, then if an order is modified on Shopify, (ie item swapped for another or edited) a new shipment gets added to shipstation and the first shipment is set to zero item.

This is all fine from a fulfillment perspective, the right order and item gets shipped out, but if the order is then canceled from Shopify, only the original "shipment" is canceled.

The second "modified" shipment is still in shipstation and get fulfilled even though the entire order was canceled on Shopify.

This is a major logic issue for large stores that separate fulfillment operations from order operations.

Not sure why shipsation handles edited order this way in the first place, the original shipment should be edited and not a second shipment created.

Hello @fastshippy!

Thank you for your post in the community! From what I understand, you were able to connect with support on this issue.

Support has suggested the following steps for others in the community who may be having this issue.

Merchants can enable the “Map multiple open fulfillment orders to requested fulfillments” setting in the Shopify Connection Settings in ShipStation. Turning this on unlocks additional features between ShipStation and Shopify; however, it can also change the import flow and order behavior—especially for merchants with specific workflows or multiple warehouses.

Once you enable this setting, please create a test order in your Shopify store. After the order appears in ShipStation, return to Shopify and edit the item in the order (similar to your previous workflow: order placed → customer changes item → system behavior occurs).

Previously, this process created a second shipment in ShipStation instead of simply updating the original one. The original order might be canceled on Shopify, but ShipStation would only cancel the first shipment while leaving the “edited” shipment active. With this setting enabled, a second shipment should no longer be created.

I have also given the development team your feedback regarding this pain point. We are always looking for ways to improve the process for our merchants.

Happy Shipping!
