It is common practice now to add an upsell app post purchase. Shopify supports updating orders after the order is created - with apps like One Click Upsell from Zipify and Carthook.

This was a popular requested feature on the previous Shipstation communit board before that community board was depepricated. If shipstation supported order edits, support for shopify order holds, or had the option for a delay on orders these apps and the upsell add to cart would work as expected.

Would love to see this supported with Shipstation soon.

And here is a bit more context from the folks at Carthook:

"For some additional context on fulfillment, Shopify released a fulfillment hold feature this Spring that affects any order that involves a post-purchase offer - this affects all post-purchase related apps and offers including OCU and CartHook.

Most orders have the “on hold” status lifted almost immediately, but for a small subset of customers who might not hit the thank you page, those orders are placed “on hold” for up to 60 minutes, and at that point, Shopify sets the status to unfulfilled. For a third-party fulfillment app to be compatible, they must utilize Shopify's latest fulfillment guidance linked above to be compatible with any post-purchase functionality."

Completely agree with this. We have an issue where items that were initially added to order by One Click Upsell are declined by credit card processor after 30 mins. Because there is no delay, the items are added to ShipStation but the customer didn't actually pay for them.
