Email is being prepared

I would like the option to send a branded email to my customers that their order is being prepared. That can be if the order is put into a shipment or you set a time limit to send  the email after its received so we don't get as many questions about when the customers order will be ready or shipped out. It would be like a new status for orders so the customer can know that their order is being prepared and then they get sent the shipment notification and then finally they get the delivery notification.
