Total Item Count (including BOM pieces)

Current order is as follows:

1 yellow ball

1 ball set (which consists of 1 red, 1 white and 1 blue ball)

The system currently counts the above order as 2 items which would would be shipped in a specific size box for 1-3 items.  In reality, the above order is 4 items which would require a different size box.  Each day we spend at least 3 hours manually adjusting 100's of these orders.  I need a calculation that can look at each sku of an order and determine how many total items are part of that order.
